How is the coronavirus transmitted?

The contagion of the virus that causes Covid-19 can be through the respiratory tract, physical contact, and contaminated surfaces. Understand.

The transmission of the new coronavirus occurs through contact with the virus, which is carried by droplets expelled by the speech, cough or sneeze of sick people. Infection occurs when these droplets come into contact with the lining of the eyes, nose, and mouth.

These droplets with the virus can be present in the air when they are expelled, or they can be on contaminated surfaces, such as the face or hands, and objects, such as door handles, elevator buttons, handrails, and supports in public transport, for example.

To avoid contagion, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that a distance of 2 meters be maintained from the sick individual, according to infectious disease specialist Wladimir Queiroz, from the Emílio Ribas Institute of Infectious Diseases, specialist in infectious and parasitic diseases and a member of the Brazilian Society Infectious Diseases.

"The Latin American custom of hugging, kissing, maintaining closer contact may prove to be a greater risk for these cultures," said Queiroz.

Cleaning the surfaces can also prevent the virus from proliferating. It can be made with disinfectant products like 70% alcohol, bleach or even soapy water.

The Ministry of Health warns against sharing personal items, such as cutlery and towels.
